Today is Black Leaders Awarness Day 2024, a day to recognise, remember and acknowledge the significant contributions of Black leaders across various sectors and industries. Leaders who have made contributions on a large scale as well as those on a smaller or more local scale. None of these contributions go unnoticed, and all of them continue to help shape and future-proof society for many years to come.

The Importance of Black Leadership

Black leaders have been at the forefront of pivotal movements and innovations that have transformed the societies we live and work in. Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman have left significant marks on history through their unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and freedom. Their legacies remind us of the power of resilience, courage, and visionary leadership. Something we can all use today!

Meet James, our founder

At Checkboard, we are proud of our founder, James. His leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping our company's success to date. As a black leader in the tech industry, James is championing innovation, and advocating for diversity and inclusion. His journey from the financial world and aspiring entrepreneur to successful business leader is an inspiring testament to the impact of dedication, passion, and hard work.

James said: “Being a leader in my opinion is about ensuring your team has everything that they need to succeed. If they need a better working environment, it is my job as a leader to ensure they have it. If they need a better work life balance to ensure they are operating at their best, it is provided. If they need a specific piece of equipment to help them perform better, it is provided. I view the role of a leader as ensuring your team is functioning at their best and have the resources they need to thrive.”

Modern-Day Trailblazers

Today, black leaders continue to break barriers and inspire future generations. Individuals like Kamala Harris, the first female Vice President of the United States, through to Bukayo Saka, Arsenal and England footballer, showcase not only their skills, but their determination and resilience.

Empowering Future Leaders

At Checkboard, we believe in the importance of fostering diversity and inclusion within our industries. We are committed to creating opportunities for aspiring black leaders and supporting initiatives that promote equity and representation. By celebrating the achievements of Black leaders, we hope to inspire young minds to pursue their passions and strive for excellence.

James added: “I have learnt that building a company is actually about providing value and serving others which includes serving your team, your customers, your suppliers and everyone in the ecosystem. That is the only purpose a company exist to do. Through this purpose and only this purpose is the exchange of value achieved. It is always fun when you look at it from that perspective.”
